Staff and Senior Staff Environmental Scientist

Job Description:

The successful candidate will perform the following activities: Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and related historical and regulatory research, and support project managers in performing Phase II ESAs, including field sampling, data compilation, and technical report preparation.

Phase I ESAs and Related Technical Reports (75%): Candidate will be experienced in independently conducting field reconnaissance activities, obtaining and summarizing historical and regulatory property records, and preparation of Phase I ESA reports. Candidate will formulate conclusions and recommendations from review of the regulatory documents and historical sources for presentation to senior personnel.  

Support Project Managers in Phase II ESAs (25%); Assist in drafting work plans, sampling and analysis plans, characterization reports, health & safety plans, permit requests, correspondence and other documents. Install groundwater monitoring wells and complete soil borings using Unified Soil Classification System. Complete groundwater contour and contaminant distribution maps. Summarize laboratory data, identify regulatory exceedances, and interface with laboratory personnel. Interact with and direct field subcontractors (drill crews, construction crews, etc.). Operate field equipment such as organic vapor analyzers, water pumps, water quality meters, and gas monitors. Complete field tasks in accordance with sampling plans and quality assurance plans. Purge and sample groundwater and collect soil samples. Review and assist managers in applying state environmental regulations. Review and implement technical protocols and procedures in accordance with company operating procedures. Travel to job sites and meetings with regulators and third parties is required.

Education:

BS/BA in Geology, Hydrogeology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or related field preferred. BS/BA in other disciplines will be considered depending on work experience.

Required Skills:

One to five years, preferably with a technical environmental consulting firm performing duties described above. Candidate should have a thorough understanding of Phase I ESAs. Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a positive attitude, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. Must be able to work both independently and as a team member.

Must have a current valid driver’s license. Willingness to travel on assignments a must. OSHA HAZWOPER training will be required, if not current.

Desired Skills:

Knowledge of AAI regulation and ASTM protocols for Phase I ESAs, remediation technologies, site characterization methods, and mechanical aptitude are beneficial.
